A hydraulic pressure compensator is an important part of a hydraulic subsea installation. The compensator generates overpressure in the system to keep water out of the oil. Furthermore, a hydraulic compensator can be seen as a reservoir to compensate variating oil volumes caused by difference in waterdepths, temperatures and movements in a hydraulic system.
Types of hydraulic compensators
There are various types of hydraulic compensators. Most basic is a rubber membrane used to compensation for temperature differences as well as waterdepths. A more advanced system is where an addition spring system creates a certain overpressure on top of the surrounding pressure. This makes it that water keeps out of a hydraulic circuit and can be monitored by a leversensor.
